W: Yes,that's a good idea — I will.

Text 4

W: Please turn on the air-conditioner. The temperature is 39℃ today.

M: I suggest you do the same.

Text 5

W: It's ten to eight already. I'll be late for work.

A

The best diet for you is the one that you can follow for the rest of your life. Most diets can get you to your goal, if you do exactly what they say.

The first thing to do is to look at what you're doing now. If it's easier for you to see where you're going wrong by writing down what you eat for the next week, then do that.

When you become familiar with the foods you choose to eat every day,it's easy to start to get used to healthier alternatives and make better choices. Let's take a look at some common lifestyle choices that could help you lose weight easily.

Got a soda habit?

Drink a lot of soda or fruit juices? Substitute water and tea instead. Studies show that just this one substitution can help you drop 20 pounds in a year.

Spending a lot of time buying fast food?

Avoid anything that you can get through a window. Bring your lunch instead. Home cooking almost automatically guarantees a meal that's lower in fat and calories than anything you could get through a window.

Never finish a meal without grease(油脂) on your hands?

Deep-fried foods are loaded with calories and fat. Fry in a little olive oil, instead.

Always having a lot of sauces?

If you're ordering sandwiches with special sauce or mayo, then you're eating a lot more calories and fat grams than you think you are. Some sauces can add more than 20 grams of fat,and hundreds of calories to your lunch. Mustard (芥末) is a good alternative. It's flavorful, and has virtually no calories or fat.

Take a look at what you're doing, and make changes you can live with.

rding to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps admitted Sunday that he had engaged in“regrettable” behavior and “demonstrated bad judgment” after a photo was published that appeared to show him smoking cannabis(大麻).

A British newspaper, the News of the World, published the photo showing Phelps, wearing a white T-shirt, holding the pipe—known as a bong—to his lips and apparently inhaling(吸烟).

“I'm 23 years old,and despite the successes I have had in the pool,I acted in an inappropriate way,not in a manner that people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public — it will not happen again.”

The newspaper said the picture was taken on November 6, 2008,almost three months after Phelps won a historic eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, when he went to a party at the University of South Carolina.

The USA Swimming, the national governing body for the sport, said it was disappointed by Phelps' admission. “We are certainly disappointed in Michael's behavior. Our Olympic champions are role models who are looked up to by people of all ages, especially young athletes,” the USA Swimming said in a statement. “We hope that Michael can learn from this incident and move forward in a positive way.” The US Olympic Committee also expressed disappointment in the swimmer, who on January 22 was named the USOC's Sportsman of the Year for making Olympic history in Beijing by collecting the most golds won by any athlete at a single Games, giving him a career total of 14 golds. “We are disappointed in the behavior recently exhibited by Michael Phelps. A primary school teacher who left a class of 25 pupils in tears after she told them Santa Claus did not exist has been fired. When excited youngsters became rowdy as they talked about Santa, the supply teacher said out suddenly,“It's your parents who leave out presents on Christmas Day.”

The class of sevenyearolds at Blackshaw Lane Primary School,Royton,Greater Manchester burst into tears and told their parents when they arrived home. Mothers and fathers then complained about the incident and were sent a letter by the school saying the teacher, who only worked at the school for one day last week, has been disciplined.

The school has now said it will not hire her again.

One father said,“My son came home and said that his teacher had told the class that Santa doesn't exist and it's their mum and dad that put out presents for them. Obviously, they were all talking about Christmas and being a bit rowdy. She just came straight out with it.”

“My son was in tears and so was everyone else in the class—especially as it was so close to Christmas .I thought it was wrong. He was crazy about it. He's only seven years old and it's part of the magic of Christmas to him.”

“We told him that she did not believe in Father Christmas because of her religion and he's fine now.”

“The father described the incident as ‘shocking’ and believed it was done with malicious intent(恶意地). A lot of parents were angry and complained to the school. The teacher, who was supplied by Rochdale and Oldham Supply Agency,is still listed and will work with other schools,”the agency said.

An annoying problem for humans, who like to boast (夸耀) about all the distant planets and moons we have explored, is that we've never taken a good look right under our noses. The inside of the earth is relatively close, but how can we get there?

The deepest oil well enters only six miles into the crust (地壳) (the center of the earth is about 4,000 miles deeper)ian scientists dug the deepest hole in Siberia, but bottomed out at about 7.5 miles below the surface. The Mohole project, a U.S. plan in the 1950s, called for drilling a hole 25 miles down to the boundary(分界线) between the hard rocks of the crust and the soft mantle (地幔)y the project involved government supporting.

It gets harder and harder to drill deep into the earth because rocks get softer and but easily broken at the surface, rocks become plastic at depth, and the pressure caused by the weight of the overlaying crust —— about 52,800 pounds per square inch at a depth of ten miles, makes further drilling impossible.

What little we know about the inside of the earth comes from indirect evidence, such as the analysis of earthquakes.

So maybe it's time for a thorough new method to explore the earth's inside. Scientist David Stevenson says we should forget about drilling holes. Instead, we should open a crack (裂缝).

Stevenson suggests digging a crack about a half mile long, a yard wide, and a half mile deep but with an explosion on the scale of a nuclear bomb. Next, he'd pour a few hundred thousand tons of molten (熔化的) iron into the crack, along with a robot. The iron, thicker than the surrounding crust, would move downward at about 16 feet per second, carrying the robot with it and opening the crack deeper and deeper. The iron mass would drop for about a week and 2,000 miles to the outer edge of the earth core, the robot sending out data to the surface.

Stevenson compares his idea to space exploration. “We're going somewhere we haven't been before,” he says,“In all possibility, there will be surprises.”

This idea can probably be put in the drawer marked with isn't Going To Happen. The robot would have to survive temperatures that would melt pretty much anything. But Stevenson's idea may inspire a new look at an old problem. Great things can come from what seems like impossible ideas.

g inside the earth is ________ than going into space.

A. more interesting

B. more possible

C. easier

D. more challenging

33. How deep have we gone into the earth until now?

Russian scientists dug the deepest hole in Siberia, but bottomed out at about 7.5 miles below the surface.

h of the following is TRUE about David Stevenson's idea?

A. It is an inspiring but not practical idea now.

B. It is a practical proposal that has come into use now.

C. It is a good proposal that will soon be put into practice.

D. It is a false theory that cannot be carried out at all.

But Stevenson's idea may inspire a new look at an old problem.

35. What might be the most suitable title for the text?

A. An Annoying Problem for Humans

B. To the Center of the Earth

C. The Mohole Project

D. David Stevenson's Proposal

答案与解析:A 此题考查主题大意,从第二句可以看到此意,A项包括B、C、D三项,但是选B、C、D中的任何一项都会否定A项。

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese student, they always say,“My spoken English is poor.” __36__ I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.

First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. __37__ However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary,if you choose a positive attitude. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.

__38__ Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly. However,in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across,to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn't matter. __39__

The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.

Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. __40__

person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.

may try to avoid making similar mistakes next time.

ously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary.

you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.

ver, their spoken English does not have to remain“poor”!

nd,they are afraid of making mistakes.

second reason lies in the reluctance of using what has just been learned.

Text 1

W: I read these instructions, but I'm still not sure how to use my mobile phone.

M: Actually,it's pretty easy. First of all, don't forget to turn it on.

W: Got it!

M: Then dial the number. And remember to press the “send” button.

Text 2

W: I hear Bill was fired by his boss the other day.

M: Oh, yes, he was sick a lot and usually got to work late.

W: Oh, no. It wasn't that. He made a big mistake in last week's deal with the computer company.

Text 3

W: How was your dinner party?

M: I think it went pretty well. People really seemed to enjoy themselves.

W: That's good.

M: Yeah, but we shouldn't have invited my wife's boss again. We can never get him to leave.

Text 4

W: How did your interview go today,Ted?

M: I could not feel better about it. The questions they put to me were quite fair. I could answer them all.

Text 5

W: The Special English programme on Channel 9 is my favourite. It helps me improve my listening.

M: Yes. It really helps a lot, especially for beginners.

Text 6

M: How did you get into modeling,Stacy?

W: Well, when I graduated from art school, I moved to Los Angeles to look for work as an art director in a movie, but I never got any luck. And I was running out of money.

M: So what did you do?

W: I got a job as a waitress in a seafood restaurant. While I was working there, a customer offered me some work as a model. Within a few weeks,I was modeling full time.

M: Wow, what a lucky break!

Text 7

W: What do you think?

M: Well ,it has just as many bedrooms as the last apartment. And the living room is huge.

W: But the bedrooms are too small. And there isn't enough closet space for my clothes.

M: And it's not as cheap as the last apartment we saw.

W: But the apartment was dark and it was in a dangerous neighbourhood.

M: Let's see if the manager of the sales department has something else to show us.

Text 8

W: Hi, Albert. This is Helen.

M: Oh, Hi. How are things?

W: Just fine, thanks. Uh,are you doing anything on Saturday night?

M: Hmm. Saturday night? Let me think. Oh, yes. My cousin just called to say he was flying in that night. I told him I would pick him up.

W: Oh, that's too bad! It's my birthday. I'm having dinner with Daniel, and I thought I'd invite more people and make it a party.

M: I'm really sorry,but I won't be able to make it.

W: I'm sorry,too. But that's OK.

Text 9

W: Nice to see you here! When did you arrive in this country?

M: Actually I'm traveling with a group. We have a very tight timetable, but as I happen to be here, I thought I might take a couple of hours off to see an old friend.

W: I am glad you did. I must apologize for sounding so rude just now for I was completely taken by surprise. You should have warned me that you were coming. Well, the most important thing is that you are here. What have you been doing so far?

M: As I just mentioned, I'm with a tourist group of old classmates, one of whom happens to be working for the tourist company. As most of us have already been to the southeastern Asian countries and some have never been to Europe, our tourist friend arranged this trip for us at a special reduced rate.

W: How lucky for you! Is it your first trip here? How have you found it?

M: Actually I've been here before, some years ago on a business trip, working for a government organization, so I've already done most of my sight-seeing in London and that's why I have some free time to myself this time.

W: Good. Now,tell me,what do you most like to see or do?

M: Well, I don't know really, I've already seen the most famous historical sites and scenic spots, and most impressive as they are, they don't tell me much about the real ordinary English people and the country.

W: I see what you mean. I'll drive you to the countryside to eat at a local pub tomorrow and perhaps you'll see something of the old England, though I must admit there is not much old England left by now. Many old village shops are closed and the village schools too. But you'll find the people in the countryside more friendly and relaxed.

Text 10

I have been weak in hearing all my life. By the time I was five years old, putting on hearing aids in the morning was just as normal as brushing my teeth. However,I never believe that it should limit my success in any way.

I have been looked down upon during my 17 years. My head teacher told my parents I belonged to a school for the deaf. My classmates told me something was wrong with my brain. People speak louder than usual when they see my hearing aids in my ears.

However,my hearing disability has made me a stronger person. I have to work harder and earn top grades in school to earn the respect of my teachers. In sports, I have had to run faster, hit harder, catch better and score more points to prove I'm not physically limited. I consider myself not different from anyone else. In my struggle to prove I'm equal to my non-disabled classmates,I have made myself better than the average teenager.

I truly believe I would not be the strong person I am today if I did not have a hearing disability.

A

From the first use of the rocket to carry satellites into space to the setting up of space stations, human beings have been putting great effort into space research. And so far,we have achieved many successes. But there are still numerous tasks in front of us and we should not cease trying to progress.

The international space station is an important step we should take in space exploration. It is not only helpful but also essential. It provides a proper space environment for many experiments that we have wanted to do for a long time. It is also a base for observations of the earth and the universe. It could also be an important base for later travel to the moon and Mars. In a word,if we want to explore space more, the first thing we should do is to set up a space station.

As the space station costs a lot of money,it is hard for one country alone to establish one. The US seems to be the only country that has the ability to build a space station alone, and it has tried to do so,but not very successful. So it aggregated many other countries to work on it together. Though it is still extremely expensive, it is much cheaper than doing it alone. It is really a job that needs everyone's effort and will benefit everyone.

But even so,the funds needed are still a big problem. As for the US,it seems that it has too many things to spend its money on. Although it is the richest country in the world it has much debt every year. It has to make arrangements about its finance, and try to find a balance in all these issues.

is the author's attitude towards building and developing the international space station?

ortive. tful.

ical. atisfied.

根据第一段最后一句“ should not cease trying to progress.”

Paragraph 2 we can conclude that ________.

necessity of building the international space station is not realized now

experiments have been done in the international space station

international space station is necessary for people to explore space more

le have traveled to Mars from the international space station

根据第二段最后一句“In a word,if we want to explore space more, the first thing we should do is to set up a space station”可知国际空间站是进行太空探索所必需的。

h of the following is not a reason for countries' cooperation in building the international space station?

it requires a lot of money.

it needs everyone's effort.

it will benefit every participation country.

it is too far away from the earth.

根据第三段第一句“As the space station costs a lot of money ...”和最后一句“It is really a job that needs everyone's effort and will benefit everyone”可知,A、B、C三项均提到了,而并没有提到D项。

underlined word “aggregated” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by ________.

ed ded

wed ade

B

Memory, they say, is a matter of practice and exercise. If you have the wish and really make a conscious effort, then you can quite easily improve your ability to remember things. But even if you are successful, there are times when your memory seems to play tricks on you.

Sometimes you remember things that really did not happen. One morning last week, for example, I got up and found that I had left the front door unlocked all night, yet I clearly remembered locking it carefully the night before.

Memory “tricks” work the other way as well. Once in a while you remember not doing something and then find out that you did. One day last month, for example, I was sitting in a barbershop waiting for my turn to get a haircut, and suddenly I realized that I had got a haircut two days before at the barbershop across the street from my office.

We always seem to find something funny and amusing in incidents caused by people's forgetfulness or absent-mindedness. Stories about absent-minded professors have been told for years, and we never get tired of hearing new ones. Unfortunately, however, absent-mindedness is not always funny. There are times when “tricks” of our memory can cause us great trouble.

you want to have a good memory, you should ________.

e yourself to remember things

a conscious effort of practice and exercise

r stop learning

hard to remember things

由第一段第二句“If you have the wish and really make a conscious effort, ...”

can we infer from the last paragraph?

nt-mindedness stories can bring people fun.

nt-mindedness is more troublesome than forgetfulness.

nt-minded professors are often amused by the incidents, too.

nt-mindedness happens not only to professors but to all other people.

由第四段第一句“We always seem to find something funny people's forgetfulness or absent-mindedness”可知,有关健忘及心不在焉的故事可以带来乐趣。

h of the following could be the best title for this passage?

Key to a Good Memory

B.“Tricks” of Memory

Dangers of Forgetfulness

Dangers of Absent-mindedness

C

Research shows that students are extremely passionate about supporting charity—88% of full time students have used the Internet to give to charity. This age group is often the least likely to have their own income 19% of 22 to 24yearolds have shortterm debts of more than £5,000. With rising personal debt levels in this age group, due to university tuition fees or personal loans and a lack of longterm savings, traditional methods of donating to charity are often not appealing (有感染力的) or possible.

Beth Truman, a 21yearold recent university graduate, has used to donate to her chosen charity, the RSPCA, for two years and has seen the “wugging” movement grow in popularity with students. “When you're at university you become more socially aware, but it's sometimes hard to give to others when you have little money yourself,” says Beth. “Wugging is great for people in this age group as it allows them to use the technology on a daily basis to give to charity, without costing them a single penny.”

Wugging is perfect for people who want to be more socially aware and supportive but don't feel they have the means to do so. Students using the web can raise money for causes they care about without costing them anything in terms of time or money, and charities get a valuable source of funding.

Can Animals Be Nice?

Scientists recently discovered that animals who live in groups, such as elephants, foxes, and wolves, are especially likely to follow some rules. If they don't,the group might break apart. Group members would be forced to live alone. Then they'd have a harder time hunting and raising their young.

Sometimes, though, animals go out of their way to do what's right, even when there's nothing in it for them. Nobody knows why. Read the three surprising stories about nice behavior in the animal kingdom.

An Unexpected Gift

Teleki,a scientist, has been running after Sniff and the other wild chimpanzees(黑猩猩) through the forest, observing their behavior. Now,he decided to knock down some fruits to fill his own stomach. Grabbing a stick,Teleki hit the branches, but he couldn't do it. Watching him,Sniff imagined himself in Teleki's picked an armload of fruits, swung down on a branch, and handed them to the astonished scientist. A Kind Heart

Toby was one generous cat. For ten years, the kindly kitty shared his food with a dog named Katie. After supper, owner Gustafson always drops some food in Katie's bowl on the floor and some in Toby's dish on the kitchen counter. Gustafson kept the cat's dish up high to keep Katie from stealing Toby's treats. Katie didn't need to steal; she only had to beg. Every night she'd sit and stare at the cat. And Toby would flick some with his paw down to the waiting dog. A Friend In Need

An African savanna elephant was grazing alone when a stranger,a forest elephant, arrived who had caught his trunk in a trap. While freeing himself,he'd hurt his mouth. He needed a help until his mouth got better. The forest elephant walked up and stuck his trunk into the healthy elephant's mouth. Elephants often aid members of their herd. But this healthy elephant didn't care that they weren't related. He reached down, uprooted a small tree, and stuffed it into his new friend's rding to the passage, animals living in groups ________.

从An Unexpected Gift 中的“Watching him,Sniff imagined himself in Teleki's place.”

did Gustafson give the food to her pets separately?

use she was afraid Katie stole Toby's food.

use she knew Toby appreciated sharing food.

use Katie always needed more food than Toby.

use she was doing a research on animals' behaviors.

从A Kind Heart 中的“Gustafson kept the cat's dish up high to keep Katie from stealing Toby's treats.”

h of the following questions isn't answered in the passage?

did the chimpanzee do to the biologist?

did the forest elephant get in trouble?

did the animals help those of different kinds?

did the Gustafson's pets share their food?

While it is impossible to live completely free of stress, it is possible to prevent stress as well as reduce its effect when it can't be avoided. The US Department of Health and Human Services offers the following suggestions for ways to deal with stress.

Try physical activity

When you are nervous, angry or upset, try releasing the pressure through exercise or physical activity. Running, walking, playing tennis, or working in your garden are just some of the activities you might try. __36__ Your body and your mind will work together to ease the stress in your life.

Share your stress

It helps to talk to someone about your anxieties and worries. Perhaps a friend, family member, teacher or even your leader can help you get a better view of what's troubling you. If you feel your problem is serious, you might seek professional help from a psychologist or a doctor. __37__

Take care of yourself

You should make every effort to eat well and get enough rest. If you easily get angry and cannot sleep well enough, or if you're not eating properly, it will be more likely that you will fall into stressful situations. If stress repeatedly keeps you from sleeping, you should consult a doctor.

Make time for yourself

Schedule time for both work and entertainment. Don't forget, play can be just as important to you over-all well-being as work. You need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun. Go window-shopping or work on a hobby. __38__

Make a list of the things you need to do

Stress can result from disorganization and a feeling that “there's so much to do, and not enough time”. Trying to take care of everything at once can be too much for you and as a result, you may not achieve anything. Instead, make a list of everything you have to do, then do one thing at a time, checking off each task as it is completed. __39__

Go ahead and cry

__40__ It might even help you avoid a headache or other physical effects of anxiety and stress.

what you want to do.

w yourself at least a half hour each day to do something you enjoy.

ical exercise will relieve your anxiety and worry and help you to relax.

42.C 由“weren't very welcoming”以及“we should return where we came from”可知,邻居们对我们很不友好,因此答案选C。

43.B 从第一段中“I was twelve years old”以及下文内容可推知,向“我”扔石头的应该是“孩子”,所以答案选B。

其他三个选项与take no notice of连用时,不符合语境。

47.C 从下文“Instead of being unnoticed,I was given...”

49.B 从“to show that I was smart”可知此处应该是指老师给“我”一个机会,因此答案选B,而不是question“问题”,test“测试”,place“位置”。

50.D 由下句“She insisted on knowing what I thought about difficult questions.”

而不是set up“建立”;put up“举起”;give up“放弃”。

55.B 由下文“the eraser hit me right on the hand”可推知,这里表示Miss Bean把一个黑板擦朝“我”扔过来,故答案为B。

59.B 既然“This incident became famous”以及“it happened to me”,所以学生开始认识“我”,故答案选B。

There's_a_lot_of_talk_in_my_class_about_whether_the_senior_3_students_should_spare_the_time_to_take_part_in_the_winter_long_run_program. 60% of the students think it is a good idea, which can require us to take exercise every day. Besides running, we can do many sports such as morning exercises, playing ping-pong ball and playing basketball, but it shouldn't take up too much time. Exercise builds one's body and reduces diseases. Sports let their brains have a rest so that their revision will be more effective.

On the other hand, 30% of the students believe taking exercise is a waste of time and tiring. After having sports, they are much too excited for a long time to pay attention to their lessons. It's also possible to be hurt in sports.

As far as I'm concerned, I think it is necessary for us to take some exercise. After some exercise, we can feel more refreshed and relaxed, which can help us learn better.
